Déjà-vu for Frings

Déjà-vu for FringsMaybe Torsten Frings doesn’t like the Westfalenstadion anymore. Maybe it is just bad luck for him. But like during the World Cup 2006, he will miss a match in our beloved temple. While back then the Italian press forced FIFA to ban Frings, this time it was a wrong call by a German referee. Last week Frings was red-carded for an alleged elbow hit. TV recordings showed that the referee was dead wrong.

Nonetheless this clash between Borussia Dortmund and Werder Bremen is about more than just one player. Both teams are fighting for Euro or even Champions League qualification. While Stuttgart is pressing from behind, Leverkusen on spot 3 are not showing their best form. Some weeks ago we would have been happy to be still on spot 4 or 5. But as our black-yellow boys earned 10 points out of the last 4 matches, we are in a position to carefully look to Leverkusen and Champions League qualification.

Werder on the other hand more or less already qualified for Europe as they are finalist to this season’s DFB cup. As they face Bayern Munich they will definitely take part in next season’s Euro League…at least. As they had a run too, they also have an eye on Bayer Leverkusen. With teen wizard Marko Marin and senior striker Claudio Pizarro in top form, they will for sure fight to the last match day.

Mats Hummels

As the stakes are high, the tickets for this match were sold like fridges in the desert. Westfalenstadion is almost sold out. There are only some spare guest tickets available on match day. So we’ll see a crowd above 80,000.

Players & positions

BVB coach Jürgen Klopp has no reason to make major changes. As Mats Hummels is back from injury and as Santana was not showing his best during the last matches, this will be the only change. Schmelzer, Hajnal and Großkreutz all have four yellow cards, so that their next booking means suspension.

Werder coach Thomas Schaaf will do some more shuffle. Goalie Tim Wiese will be back on the pitch. Same goes for Naldo, who was suspended last week. Due to the afore mentioned red card Torsten Frings will miss this clash, so that Bargfrede gets his chance. Aaron Hunt will replace Hugo Almeida.
