Reports from the matches in the international competitions

Tuesday evening, around 10.45pm. I'm on my twenty-minute walk home from the Westfalenstadion after the last match of this season's Champions League run against Olympique Marseille. I carry two bottles of Dortmunder beer with me. The streets are filled with cars which are filled with BVB supporters. No celebrating this time. No chants on the street, just some sort of mingling. The only sounds I can hear, however, are the voices in my head thinking about the last 90 minutes, asking myself how I could write a match report about this match and the sound of the little bell hanging at my black and yellow Santa hat, jingling as I shake my head in disbelief. For the first time since a long time, I go home disappointed. Not about the kind of gameplay we showed in the match, even not really about the (in the end) not really interesting result... but about the way we gave the victory away in just five minutes. About the way Borussia left Champions League 2011/2012.

It is not really easy to find the right words for the game on Wednesday, or the feelings that followed afterwards. It was a sad day, in the end, for some reasons. Not completely, but somehow, very sad. And as you can tell from the first sentence already, it is hard to find proper words for the 23rd of November. So let me take you through my days in London, which were absolutely amazing.

“There are no failures - just experiences and your reactions to them.”
In the last few weeks the printing press of Germany regarded "experience" as one major point for discussion when reporting about Borussia Dortmund and the results of the current Champions League season 2011/2012. Especially me was one of those persons who hardly criticized experience as a reason for success. In my opinion the last Bundesliga season proved that even young, restless and high motivated football players can achieve great triumphs without 500 competitive match performances. Last evening proved me wrong, at least for the Champions League. But all in its proper time.

Ouch. The 3-0 defeat in Marseille definitely hurts. Why? Because once again, Borussia was the better team over most parts of the match. Once again, Borussia had more possession than the opponent. Once again, Borussia had the opportunities to make this away game a win. However, once again, Borussia was severely punished for two individual mistakes by its defenders. Once again, statistics don't matter at the end of the day. Once again, you could get the feeling that Borussia can play as well as all players can but end up with having nothing in European competitions. Once again, the German championship winner had to face a bitter defeat.

Tuesday afternoon. I make my way to Dortmund city by underground, some fans are dressed in black and yellow, but not many people are on the streets at around four o'clock. When I get nearer to my destination old market, something like atmosphere comes up. I hear chants. Not the chants I used to know, English chants. When I went around the corner, I saw at the first glance where the chants are coming from. People dressed in red and white, chanting English songs. Arsenal supporters. Yes, Borussia is finally back in the biggest European competition there is today. Borussia is finally back in the Champions League. After nine long years, I will hear the Champions League hymn in Westfalenstadion again. From this point on, I knew that it will be a great day in Dortmund even though I did not knew that I will go home from the match with a big smile.

A long time ago there were some young men who came from a kingdom in a wonderful area called Ruhrpott. This area was full of joy, delicious meals and drinks and the people who lived there were the kindest and nicest people you could imagine. The King of Dortmundia was called King Kloppo and he was a very wise and powerful man who was surrounded by his minister of the interior Aki Watzko and his scout Michaelin Zorcus.

A homegame in Paris? Quite so. Maybe we can call this the reason why we did not manage to win in Paris. Our away games tended to turn out lucky for us during this season (lets count the cup game out) and the signs were good for a great game in Paris. Since Wednesday the city appeared to be covered in black and yellow as 10.000 Dortmundfans decided to go to Paris and support their beloved BVB on this hard game against Paris St. Germain. After the unfortunate tie a couple of weeks ago, the team was now eager to take home three points in order to get one step closer to the play off rounds that would follow next year. Sadly things do not always go the way we want them to go.

Let's be honest and straight-forward: nobody likes the French. Why? Oh, there are many reasons for that and supporters of Borussia Dortmund got to know a little bit more in their match against Paris St. Germain, which ended in a bitter 1-1. Remis. There we have it, one of the reason why nobody likes the French. Remis. It's very simple and really that easy. Remis. The French language sucks! After studying French for seven years in school ending up in only knowing half of the vocabulary today and understanding less than the half of French people speaking in a terrible fast way, I have the right to say that. And everyone who heard the annoying announcements during the match in the Westfalenstadion will agree to that. So, nobody likes the French... and honestly, they don't even like each other. But we will come to that point later...
