History

BVB was founded on 19th December 1909 by young footballers, who were protesting against the local pastor. The clerkman bullied them in public. Rebellion against the church was in those days something like a punishable act and you can imagine how courageously the founders must have been. Borussia's first jersey was blue-white (!) striped and had a diagonal red sash. Only in 1913, after the club merged with two others, the traditional yellow-black jersey became official. The club's first ground was the "Weiße Wiese" ("White Lawn"), which was home to Borussia till 1926. Then BVB moved to the "Rote Erde" ("Red Soil"). Here the club celebrated some of their biggest successes. Only in 1974 Borussia moved to the new estfalenstadium , which was buildt for the 1974 World Cup. But here one of the darkest hours had to be suffered....in 1972 the club relegated to 2. Bundesliga and only 4 years later in 1976 promotion became reality. Till the end of the 80's Borussia Dortmund only reached midfield places in table. This changed in 1991 when Ottmar Hitzfeld took charge of the team and kicked off the most successful era of Borussia. Together with Hitzfeld the club's 4th and 5th German Championships in 1995 and 1996 were achieved only to find its climax in 1997 when the Champions League was won against Juventus. This is the BVB's greatest trophy and makes Borussia Dortmund the most successful German club in the 90's.
