Klopp: We want to win the league

Every once in a while you have the chance to see longer in-depth interview with Borussia Dortmund coach Jürgen Klopp, usually he gives a few good newspaper interviews but ever since his days a pundit he shows up longer than the usual interview format on TV. Audi Star Talk invited Klopp along and interviewed the Borussia Dortmund windfall. The show is going to be broadcasted on Sport1 tonight (March 22nd) at 10.30pm CET and the second part on Friday March 25th at 10.30pm CET.  We can already present you with the most important statements this afternoon.

Jürgen Klopp:

On winning the league: (Video 1)
„And now things are clear“„That we want to win the league? Of course we want to do it. We are not stupid”

On the (possible) youngest championship team ever: (Video 2)
“We have the opportunity to turn an outstanding season into a historic season. The youngest German champion to ever get their hands on that thing. In a fantastic club with the most amazing fans you could ever dream of …”

On Bayer Leverkusen: (Video 3)
“That we are seven points clear of Bayer Leverkusen right now, a team that can leave Michael Ballack on the bench or field him. And leaves Bender and Ballitsch out.  And plays Rolfes but benches Barnetta because Renato Augosto is playing.  Utter madness, sheer quality. If someone is able to name our players #14 to #17 – he must have been bred with BVB milk. All of them are boys that have never played Bundesliga before. It is a difference like night and day”

(As a learned teacher) on the school class BVB: (Video 4)
“If I had worked as a sports teacher it would have been the same age-structure, maybe a bit younger. We had a lot of luck regarding the quality and the character of those players. We knew, they were all talented. But that they are able to actually call up their talent in this fashion, was beyond our wildest expectations. It is one hell of a ride working with those boys. For every sports teacher it would be a dream come true having a “class” like this. All of them are A-level candidates”

On Aki Watzke: (Video 5)
He is a legend! You have to say that. Fortunately! I have been blessed many times. If I was to say I am an unhappy person, I would be out of my head”

On his phone call with Uli Hoeneß before signing to Dortmund: (Video 6)
“I have been on the phone with Uli Hoeneß, of course. However..He called me – as I don’t have his number. He called with CLIR – he was lucky enough to get me on the line.  For everyone wanting to receive an Uli-Hoeneß-call: His number is CLIRed. Always pick up the phone:  It could be Uli… I was a second league coach at that time and did not have the feeling  Uli Hoeneß had to stick by his words or we had agreed terms on anything. I was honored by their interest thus it was good feeling. But not for one second I believed I was Bayern coach”

On a possible change of guards at the Bundesliga top: (Video 7)
“This is an extraordinary year. We have an extraordinary team, which we ideally would like to keep together, add some fresh blood and make even better. But with reason and close to our resources. This also means that Bayern – if they not mess  things up four years in a row – is unreachable in the long run.”

On his ambitions in politics: (Video 8)
“If I had to engage with themes all day of which only a maximum of 20% are of personal interest to me and then had to make a government statement – dreadful. I do not have any ambition forcing a career in politics. I am often amazed how you can be economy minister one day and minister of defence the other day and don’t know what to do in both jobs.

On his first sending off as a coach: (Video 9)
I really liked my first sending off (back in Mainz). I am still somewhat proud of it, only of this one, not the others. I had walked up to the fourth ref and had said: “I only want to ask how many wrong calls are allowed, if it’s 15 you still have one call”

On his youth days at his grannies beer-brewery: (Video 10)
“I drank the first last sips of a beer bottle when I was 13. From there it took me another four or five years until I drank beer. But of course all grandchildren helped her cleaning the bottles and stuff – we all were involved. The smell of beer was in my nose from when I was real young.”
