Wind of change has come to an end

Everything that seemed so fine and pleasant was destroyed within 90 minutes. Borussia was an easy target for Wolfsburg, providing a dull defence and a weak offence. The only consolation: After this match it seems clear whom Thomas Doll can trust – and whose time in Dortmund is probably over.

The longer the week, the worse were the news. Having been happy on Monday celebrating the team’s 6:1 in Westfalenstadion, the partying crowd of Dortmunders had started doubting on Wednesday when Florian Kringe’s participation on today’s match had become implausible. The next day, Robert Kovac and Sebastian Kehl could not take part in Thursday’s practise. What a coincident that just those three players standing for the strengthening of our team had to miss the match against the car-kickers from Wolfsburg! Thus coach Doll had to change the team on three positions: Wörns came into the team for Kovac, defending together with Kuba as right back, Amedick in the centre and Dede as left back. As for the midfield, Buckley replaced Kringe and Kruska joined the starting eleven for Kehl. Both were accompanied by Tinga and Federico as playmaker. At least the attack maintained continuity since Petric and Valdez started there. The voluminous troupe led by wannabe Napoléon Felix Magath ordered Schäfer and Dejagah to start for Baier and Grafite.
The first 5 minutes of the match were derived from the victories against Stuttagart and Bielefeld: A quick combination in our midfield provided a big chance for Federico whose shot from 20 metres was not precise enough. However, these were the last 5 good minutes of the year 2007: Dejagah gave a cross into the penalty area and ex-captain Christian Wörns tried anything but not getting the ball out of danger. His defending header served Schäfer who accepted the offer and scored from 18 metres by his left foot. Keeper Weidenfeller looked quite clumsy in this situation! Wake-up call for our team? Unfortunately not: A few moments later, Schäfer broke through on the left side delivering a sharpe cross into the penalty area where Ricardo Costa scored hardly marked by anyone. What about a wake-up call now? Negative report: Wolfsburg remained dangerous and our team only had a chance shortly before half-time when Delron Buckley fired from 20 metres but Lenz had no problems with taking this one out. In comparison to the last matches there was no (!) phase in which the team took over the control; the defence was nothing but instable and Kruska was not aggressive enough for a number 6.
The second half started promising when Valdez missed the target from an acute angle. But these hopes were history when Schäfer again duped Kuba on the left wing gave a cross and no one felt responsible for Gentner who decided the match. This feeling was apparently conveyed to our team: Apart from a chance by Klimowicz´(seen the first time in this situation) in the 76th minute, when he tried a Lop that has missed the goal, Dzeko finalised the disaster. Being served by Radu, he turned around Wörns and loped way more precisely than Klimo before (78th). Wörns never looked capable of coping with Dzeko. It seems, as if his time in Dortmund, as if his time in Bundesliga, comes to an end as he cannot keep with the pace.
It would be interesting to know what the result would look like if Kovac, Kringe and Kehl had been part of the team. Why? Because we could then say whether this disastrous match was due to the lack of these key players or to a lack of character within the team. We cannot say really. But what we can say is that all the good hope, all the positive tendencies after the last to matches are gone. It seems as if we can be happy if this is due to the quality of some players. Otherwise it might be difficult to wake up the sleeping giant Borussia gain…
