Eintracht Frankfurt reloaded
Last week we survived this year’s second round of the DFB Cup by beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1 and this coming weekend we are again hosting the eagles from Hessia. Adding to that there are some rumours regarding our players. Werder Bremen and Feyenoord Rotterdam have an eye on 2 of our players. A tour to Indonesia is the topping on the cake.Only the long-time BVB supporters know how that feels: Proceeding to the 3rd round of the DFB Cup. Where we normally wasted this chance for qualifying for European competition even before winter break, this time we managed to stay. In a hard fight we were 2-1 winners over Eintracht Frankfurt last week. The match was surely exciting but in the end we deserved to proceed. And as Fortuna was with us, the draw gave us another match at Westfalenstadion. Though Werder Bremen will be a tough match we have already beaten them at home this season. If we are able to perform like in this brilliant 3-0, we shouldn’t be afraid of this clash.
The Siegen-born player joined Borussia Dortmund when he was 13 years old and apart from 2 years that he was loaned to 1. FC Köln he played for Borussia only. Some might think, that a player like him is automatically bound to the Westphalia city, but having a look at this week’s sports magazines showed us that also other clubs in Bundesliga recognized his performances. While he prefers playing in left midfield, he is versatile enough to act as right or left fullback, as holding midfielder or even as attacking midfielder. Werder Bremen’s sporting manager, Klaus Allofs, knows that, and seems to have made an approach. As Florian Kringe’s contract expires next summer, he would be able to leave on a free transfer. That makes it even easier for other clubs and gives Kringe a comfortable position. If Michael Zorc wants to keep him at Strobelallee, he needs to move quickly and make a excellent offer for a new contract.
He was the youngest player ever to play in Bundesliga, the youngest scorer of Bundesliga, the youngest Turkish national player and the youngest scorer for Turkey ever. Arsene Wenger wanted to sign him when es just turned 17 and offered more than 3 million Euros. What looked like a rocket-like career somehow didn’t develop like predicted. At the end of last season BVB officials even weren’t sure whether Sahin would get significant playtime, so they were happy when former BVB coach and Sahin admirer Bert van Marwijk called and wanted to loan the young Turkish midfielder. And as it seems the plan worked out. Sahin is a regular starter and has even scored and given assists. Together with Ajax Amsterdam Feyenoord is topping the Dutch league. In consequence Feyenoord now want to make the loan deal a permanent one. But it does not seem likely that Borussia sell Sahin. Not unless Rotterdam make a real big offer.
We all know that German 1. Bundesliga lack the money that the leagues in England, Spain, Italy and even France have. The top officials have since long developed strategies to close the gap and see especially in abroad marketing great potentials. To further strengthen the Bundesliga brand some Bundesliga clubs, normally those that do not play European competition, will be sent out to friendly matches all over the world. Some weeks ago Borussia Dortmund was already guest in Poland where they draw 2-2 against Legia Warsaw. This time Bundesliga want BVB to play a friendly in Indonesia against either the national, Olympic or an all-star team. The match is scheduled for the week before Christmas.
12 matches played and only 14 points on the record, surely Borussia Dortmund officials and supporters aren’t happy with this. Last week we lost in Hanover – match that we shouldn’t have lost as we clearly dominated the first 25 minutes. Unfortunately we then lost everthing and deserved the 2-1 defeat. That brings us into the miserable situation that we are now under real pressure to make it a three-pointer at home. Though we already beat Eintracht Frankfurt 10 days ago, it will surely turn out into a real fight. Borussia have to do without long-time injured Alexander Frei and Daniel Gordon., so Thomas Doll has many options. As he was really angry about performance in Hannover, he might leave Nelson Valdez and Delron Buckley on the bench and switch back to 4-4-2. That could bring Diego Klimowicz back on the pitch as a second striker along with Petric. Guest coach Friedhelm Funkel has to cope injuries midfielders Albert Streit, Alexander Meier, Markus Weissenberger and central defender Aleksandar Vasoski. It is likely that Frankfurt act with 4-4-2 and 2 holding midfielders.
