One Wörns Goal = Position Four in the Table
Borussia Dortmund 1 – Hamburger SV 0:
With Christian Wörns late goal in the 82. Minute, Borussia Dortmund moves up to position four in the league!
It was only the second home game for Borussia this season. Due to international duties of the German team and the DFB cup (FA cup) weekend, the Bundesliga had a break for three weeks. After loosing in Munich, not winning home against Mainz and winning in Stuttgart, Borussia was a little bit under pressure to win the second home game!
The game was only one minutes old when Kringe had the first chance! After a Tinga cross his header just missed the goal. Then Hamburg scored a goal but luckily Sanogo was offside! After that it was more or less over with the attacking scenes. A lot happened in midfield. Both teams tried to dominate the game but no team was able to put enough pressure on the other squad. In the 25. Minute it was then a screaming highlight in the WESTFALENSTADION when the entire south stand shouted. It was impressive but lasted only for 20 seconds. You still are wondering how quite a stadium with a sold out capacity of 80TSD spectators can be. It was louder in the city of Dortmund when during the fantastic weather the fans flow into the city (cheers to the Jägermeister fan club who visited Dortmund!). Back to the football basics. It was Degen who tried a lot over the right wing but his crosses did not find most of the time the attacking players Valdez or Frei. So it was goalless for halftime.
Valdez had to be substituted by Smolarek due to an injury. Ebi Smolarek had also the first chance, he converted a nice pass, but also the referee decided on offside! That was narrow! Borussia was now better in control of the game. 11 vs. 4 corners and 27 vs. 11 crosses are a clear indicator. A wide header hit the post (56.minute), Kruskas wide shoot also, Frei had a big chance. But also Hamburg had a good chance and Guerrero missed the best one in the 68. Minute. So it looked like a goalless tie and again no home win. Then came the 82. Minute. Dedes free kick was gliding into the box and somehow Wörns gave the ball the little touch! 1-0 for Borussia! What would come now? Against Mainz it was in the same Minute when the opponent could equalize! This time the squad was better prepared and nothing happened!
Borussia deserved the first home victory! Hamburg is a champion’s league team and did not played bad this sunny Saturday. But Borussia had this one lucky moment more and that is sometimes all what it takes. Now the team is on position four but it is all very close. Next Friday BVB has to proof this result when they are taking on Borussia Mönchengladbach in the so called ‘Borussia Park’.
Bert van Marwijk: First half both teams had the same organisation and did not allow too much. The pace should have been higher. In the second half we really played well. We wanted to win and worked hard for it and I think we deserved it because we had the better chances in the second half. We are not there were we would like to be, we still have to work very hard.
Christian Wörns: I was not really fit and had to take some fever tablets. If one of the other defenders would have been fit then I did not play. I think I touched the ball with the back of my head when I scored the goal.
Borussia Dortmund: Weidenfeller (3) – Wörns (3), Brzenska (3), Degen (3), Dede (4) – Kruska (4), Kringe (4), Tinga (3), Pienaar (4) - Frei (4), Valdez (5)
