Odonkor runs direction Spain
The news came suddenly over the last weekend but right now it is really a done deal. Borussia Dortmund home-grown talent and world cup star David Odonkor has been transferred to Spanish side Real Betis Balompie of Seville. BVB will get a transfer fee of about 6.5 mio Euro.David joined Borussia Dortmund at the age of 14 already when scouts saw him play at SV Bünde in the Westphalian neighbourhood. He was drawn to the pro side by former BVB coach Matthias Sammer and was from the very beginning the fastest player on the squad. Rumours say that he really does 10.7 seconds on 100 metres. His Bundesliga debut was in our last championship season, 2001/02. 74 matches and 2 goals followed. Especially during the last season, when BVB coach Bert van Marwijk switched to a 4-3-3 formation, Odonkor played 33 of 34 matches as a right winger. But as van Marwijk switched back to 4-4-2 this season and Borussia Dortmund signed two new strikers in Nelson Valdez and Alexander Frei, he saw little chances to get much play time.
Though Odonkor was already known among football fans in Germany, the world heard of him during his national team appearances at this year's world-cup. He was really THE surprise on Jürgen Klinsmann's squad, which no one had expected. But he proved that he is able to play exactly what Klinsmann asked him for. So it were really his runs in the Poland match that brought us Neuville's winning goal.
All we can do now is to say good-bye to a long time and home-grown BVB player and wish him all the best in Seville.
Adiós David!
