Hard work victory - but deserved

Dortmund against Duisburg, what somehow sounds like “Derby” most of the time turns out like the kind of matches against these “grey mice”. The 2:0 victory wasn't boring, but a classical “worked-out” victory

„Jürgen Kohler – Fussballgott“ (means something like „Jürgen Kohler – Godfather of football“) - it is very rare, that a opponent's coach is welcomed like that, but Kohler deserved that, playing at least seven years in Dortmund. But one thing was clear for everyone on the stands: If Kohler's team would play like he did, it would be a very, very hard piece of work. And it turned out like that. Duisburg wasn't as weak as in the first round's match, but offense football looks different.
Borussia tried to get control immediatly, but Duisburg was well organized and with their two defense lines they mad the room to play very narrow. Only Odonkor was able to make something with his speed. Dortmund did clearly more for the match, but the first chance was for Duisburg. Lottner started an attack, passed in the penalty area, but the waiting striker headed clearly besides the goal. Five minutes later it was Borussia's turn, Sahin played a nice freekick towards the goal, Smolarek started towards it, but headed highly over the goal.
Borussia Borussia get's to play better and creates some chances, but Gambino fails, after a nice combination with Dede, on some defenders foot. Rosicky tries to play long and high on Smolarek, but Duisburg's Möhrle takes good care of him. In minute 23 their was the next excitment when Duisburg played a free kick in Borussias penalty area which is enhanced by some Duisburg offender, but Weidenfeller saved in the last moment. After half an hour Odonkor recieved the ball, direclty marched toward Duisburg's goal, played give an go with Smolarek to play dangerously into the penalty area, where Gambino waited, but he headed over the goal. Eight minutes later it was again Odonkor, who once more came over the right wing, but he missed the goal. Shortly before the break Borussia had some opportunities, but nothing clearly.
After the break, Duisburg became a little bit more active, but it took until minute 53, until something happend. A quick Duisburg counter attac, Weidenfeller barely saved, but the ball get's to Lavric who stands alone in front of the goal, but (and it was almost impossible) he missed. Borussia remained the more active team, but neither Sahin or Rosicky managed to get control of the game. So Duisburgs strikers appeared in front of Borussia's goal again. Lavric shot from the right wing onto the goal, Weidenfeller had no cance reaching it and the ball hit the goal post and Brenzska manages to clear. That was the best chance in the entire match. At once Duisburg could have been in the lead, because our team had no idea how to deal with Duisburgs very defense tactic. Borussia was cleary the better team, but without chances for a goal. Duisburg became more brave, but in minute 66 it was Dortmund's turn again. Odonkor played on Smolarek, but his goal attemped was saved by Duisburg's goalie Koch. The corner was played by Sahin, Degen extended it towards Brenzska, who was completly left alone and had no problem to score for the 1:0.
The match remained low on highlights. Only in minute 85 their was some excitment again. A Duisburgc corner can be cleard and Degen get's the ball and suddenly was completly alone in front of Duisburg's goal. He starts his alone run, overplay's one defender and also want's to overplay Goalkeeper Kock when Duisburg's just exchanged Willi hustled him down. Clear decision by the referee: Penalty and red card for Willi. Rosicky took the ball and rammed it into the goal. Koch had his hands on it, but the ball had to much speed (almost 100 km/h).
A lot more did not happen. Borussia played the time down and was happy about these three points.

Summary:Was the victory now lucky or deserved? Duisburg had the better chances, must lead 2:0 before Borussia scored. Besides the chances our team was superior in all points: 59 % on the ball, 57 % won duels, 14 goal attempts. Wörns had 106 ball contacts – remarkable. The only thing missing is the penetrating power in front of the goal and against Duisburg their were midfield ideas missing. Typically for this match: A defender was the best man on the pitch: Markus Brenzska.
Statements:
Jürgen Kohler:
Compliment to my team. In the first half, we were very disciplined. In the second half we had two 100 percent chances and must have been in the lead. Shortly after that we had to take the goal. The performance of the team make me look positivly towards the rest of the season. A special thans to the BVB Fans for the nice „welcome“.

Bert van Marwijk:
I saw it different: In the first half we played very good against a unbelievable defense team. In such a situation you have to wait for your chance, which we did. In one phase of the match the team took to much risk and Duisburg had the chance to score two times. But we came back. Markus Brenzska mad a good match. It doesn't always look very good what he does, but he plays very good, and now he starts to score. I am happy, that I have three good defenders for the inner positions. That was different in some times. Philipp Degen now shows, what I told him the last half year.
