New faces for Borussia
The Bundesliga-season 2004/2005 has come to an end a few weeks ago and now the clubs are chasing all over the continent for their new recruits. All the clubs? No there is one club that has nearly finished his transfer activities for the next round. While a transfer-storm begins to hit the Bundesliga (Van der Vaart, Hanke, Brdaric, Ismael, Frings, Kurany, Ailton etc.) the Management of Borussia Dortmund has done his homework and so it seems as if the squad for 2005/2006 is already fixed. So we like to present you the newcomers and those who will leave the club.
- Guillaume Warmuz: The French Goalie didn’t like to continue in the role of a number 2 and so he preferred a transfer to AS Monaco where he will fight with Fabio Roma for the first place.
- Otto Addo: Addo wasn’t satisfied with the offer that Borussia made him so he decided to go to the Uefa-Cup-participant FSV Mainz 05.
- Evanilson: Contract has been released and so Eva returned to Brazil.
- Timo Achenbach: Borussia had an option to get him back from FC Cologne but didn’t use it so Timo will stay in Cologne.
- Sunday Oliseh, Ahmed Madouni, Andre Bergdölmo, Malte Metzelder, Guy Demel and Thiago: End of contract for all those players. Some like Demel or Madouni got an offer for prolongation but they didn’t agree and so they have to find a new club. Others like Oliseh or Bergdölmo were told to quit.
Another one Borussia wants to get rid of is Juan Ramon Fernandez but the Argentinean has got a contract till 2007.
Manager Michael Meier will also leave the club after over 15 years. This is for most of the fans good news because Meier has caused together with former president Gerd Niebaum the financial chaos that Borussia has to live with for a long and uncertain time.
- Philipp Degen: The Swiss national player has finished his contract with Swiss Champion FC Basel and will join the Borussia in summer. He will play on the right defensive wing and so Christoph Metzelder can return to his former position in the middle together with Wörns.
- Delron Buckley: South-African national player who comes for about 500.000 € from Arminia Bielefeld with a reference of 15 season-goals. He’s a talented left-wing-striker who could compete with Ewerthon for a place in the starting eleven.
- Bernd Meier: A Goalie with quite a lot of experience. Loyal second goalie that shouldn’t cause any problems with his role as a bench player. Should be good enough to replace Weidenfeller for some moments. This sentence qualifies him for Borussia: “I would even walk by feet all the way down from Ahlen (his former team) to Dortmund to get the chance to play for this club”.
- Dennis Gentenaar: Another Goalkeeper. „Why BVB needs three goalies?“, will certainly be the question of some of you my dear readers. Well it’s a very simple reason for this. A few days after the transfer agreement with Meier, Bernd got badly injured during a training session. He’s got a knee-injury and won’t be fit until 2006. So the management had to react and so they signed Dutch Goalie Dennis Gentenaar from NEC Nijmegen. The 29-year-old player got a contract for one year and it seems as if he really wants to compete with Roman for the number 1 position. So he’s not the guy like Meier who’s aware of his number 2 status.
- Ebi Smolarek: You certainly know that Ebi belongs since January to the BVB-squad but until now he was only lend by Feyenoord for the rest of the season 04/05. Borussia has bought the transfer rights from Rotterdam and so “Smolli” will stay at the club.
Borussia wants to recruit another defender if possible from one of this two candidates: Martin Amedick from Eintracht Braunschweig and Markus Bollmann from SC Paderborn. Unfortunately (for us) both clubs have promoted from third into the second League and so it will be more difficult for Dortmund to sign one of these talented youngsters.
To conclude I have to say that these are the actual standings. So we don't know if there is a Russian Millionaire who will offer a huge amount for one of our players. Because of the actual financial situation of Borussia Dortmund there could be a need to sell someone like Ewerthon or Rosicky if the deal is lucrative.
So if there are new transfers the article will be updated with the new facts.
Update: Borussia seems to have finished the transfer activities. Martin Amedick who still has a contract till 2006 couldn't be bought because Braunschweig claimed around one million Euros for the talented defender. So young talent Uwe Hünemeier will get his chance as number 4 defender.
