Comeback after 626 days – Christoph Metzelder is back
Two thousand fans of Borussia were happy to see Christoph Metzelder back on the pitch during the Amateurs game against Eintracht Braunschweig in the 3rd division. For the first time after his long injury he was playing in the black and yellow jersey again. We’ve asked him shortly after the game how he felt. There was already cheering from the supporters when the members of the squad were named. ‘With the number 21 Christoph Metzelder!’ Finally he is back again.Schwatzgelb.de: Christoph, after such a long time you are back on the pitch. How long was that now, around 20 months?
Christoph Metzelder: At one point I stopped counting. I’ve read on a banner today that it was 626 days. As a team player you can not be happy when you lose two – nil. The game was balanced. We’ve made two mistakes. One time with the allocation of the players and then we lost the ball during an attacking phase. Besides that we should not lose the game. That was not fair, although Braunschweig is a very clever team and they deserve to be top of the league. They also have some seasoned players and it was not easy for our team to include five players from the professional squad. That disturbs the rhythm. That is the problem of the amateur team and we have to thank them that we were able to gain some match practice, although it costs them some success.
Schwatzgelb.de: Your brother Malte said that one could see your stress level before the game.
Christoph Metzelder: Of course! I had for 2.5 years only every third day the situation of a game practice and then for 1.5 years none at all. It was also on a short notice that we decided that I was going to play today, because of that the stress level was very high. I did not know were I stood. Goes everything well? Is everything holding? So now I’m even happier.
Schwatzgelb.de: Is the Saturday game against Rostock something you are thinking about?
Christoph Metzelder: If the coach wants to discuss that with me then it becomes a topic. I don’t know if it is realistic, but I would say I do it then. I believe in myself. But there are also other options which he is maybe going to use.
