Borussias Fever Pitch on the road to.....
Nowhere, or to glory? More than a week has passed since the UI Cup termination shock. It looks as though after the last pre season test games that the BVB squad has built up confidence again. The main question will be if this time the team has the stability, faith and spirit in itself to produce good solid results and if they will able to fight for the top five places in the German Bundesliga. You just have to mention these names and every BVB supporter will immediately stop building dream castles! Too often, the squad has deserted the hopes of the club, the supporters and themselves. It looks like it is a special BVB disease, to promise one thing and to deliver another. This season again the hopes are high for the top places in the league and also the financial pressure is there to reach one of the first five places which are the entry ticket to the European club games. But Borussia have to be aware that it will be very hard this year to reach goals like these. Besides the usual suspect Bayern Munich there will be the teams from Bremen (current champion), Leverkusen, Stuttgart and Schalke which have very good teams this season. Especially the blue white rivals from Herne-West who have spent a lot of money and bought very good players (including Ailton) from other teams. Borussia on the other hand have not spent anything on new transfers. Kringe came back from Cologne, Oliseh from Bochum (or should we say from the court bench). Instead the BVB had to sell Frings to Munich.
Borussia separated with their former coach Matthias Sammer (now coaching Stuttgart) and Bert van Marwijk took over the head coach position. There was a big hype about the new spirit and a 'let's go' atmosphere at Borussia when van Marwijk started. But all that was gone after the devastating performance against KRC Genk and the drop out of the European club football.
After the Genk disaster Bert van Marwijk stated in an interview: 'I think I was misunderstood. I'm not here to give training so that the players can laugh and have fun. If you work hard and concentrate you can laugh and have fun, of course. That is normal. But I think that there will not be a lot to laugh about in the next days.'
So it looks like finally van Marwijk has realised the situation in which the club and the squad is. Hopefully Meier and Niebaum have not promised him a rose garden before he started at Borussia! The situation is already tense, even the first game has not been played, which will be the home game this Saturday against Wolfsburg. Normally one would say three easy points for Borussia because Wolfsburg has not won anything in the past years in the Westfalenstadium. But nothing is normal these days in Dortmund.
It also looks like van Marwijk has found his starting squad: Warmuz will be the number one goal keeper, Ewerthon and Koller attacking forwards. Behind them Rosicky, Dede, Kehl and Oliseh will take over the midfield positions. The biggest question marks are in the defence. Wörns is still injured, as is Demel. So it looks as though Madouni, Evanilson, Bergdölmo and Jensen will try to stop the VW attacking players. Madouni showed some poor pre season performances on the pitch, and Evanilson did not look too strong against Genk.
The supporters on the other hand are again ready for the action! Almost 50 thousand season tickets are sold, Borussia is calculating with an average of 75 thousand spectators for the home games.
Whatever the new season will bring, Borussia you will never walk alone!
BVB: Warmuz , Evanilson , Madouni, Bergdölmo, Jensen, Dede, Kehl, Oliseh, Rosicky, Ewerthon, Koller - Coach: Bert van Marwijk
