Dortmund signs Danish national player
Sunday evening BVB confirmed they’re near to signing Danish national Niclas Jensen. Fernandez’ sudden and complete irresponsible escape back to Argentinia forced Borussia to become active on the transfermarket.Almost two weeks ago BVB surprised us with the transfer of Malte Metzelder. Also it was a signing for the future, they attracted attention throughout Germany due to his brother’s rocket-like career. Last Friday the next sensation: Juan Ramon Fernandez left Dortmund and flew back to Argentinia without BVB’s permission. Yet we haven’t got to know what circumstances made him act like this, but those of you who know Sammer can predict that the talented Argentinean won’t get another chance.
Already in winter it was clear that Jörg Heinrich had to leave Dortmund as his contract expired in June 2003. The fexible left-footer, who had his best days behind him, moved to 1.FC Köln instead. And when Matthias Sammer surprisingly lost another alternative for the left side it became clear that BVB had to react. The scouts and mangers at Borussia probably had to do hard work since Friday. According to the newspaper “Westfälische Rundschau” the club wants to bring Niclas Jensen as soon as possible to BVB’s summer trainingscamp in Irdning/Austria.
Who is Niclas Jensen? Most of the German football fans probably don’t know him. But he is an experienced national player, who is already for the second time at a club outside Denmark. 1996 the now 28 years old played for PSV Eindhoven but failed to make an impact and so returned home to FC Kopenhagen. In 2002 he made another try and joined Manchester City in a deal worth 1,2 Mio Euro. City’s manager Kevin Keegan believes in Jensen’s abilities. Most of the time he is the left man in a flat four back, but also has offensive elements without losing sight of his defensive duty.
At last Jensen was a regular starter for Manchester City due to his flawless attitude. He lacks constancy what is the reason why Keegan doesn’t want to guarantee him a regular starting place for next season. But now matter with that, because now he will join Dortmund and act as a replacment for Dede or as an alternative for left midfield. Not a bad decision at all. Jensen is very experienced (15 national team matches, 250 in three professional leagues) and maybe the answer to our chronical freekick and corner misery. With his huge leftshot he already scored some goals and he has a good base speed. A player who raises the quality of Borussia significantly he isn’t but means reliableness for sure. Contrary to Fernandez... .
Also he could give Matthias Sammer some new tactical options. At a lineup with two strikers only, which seems likely in the early matches due to Ewerthons journey with Brazil’s U-23 team to the Gold cup in Mexico and USA, Jensen could be the man in left midfiled and so even play together with Dede. Contract length, salary, transfer fee haven’t yet been revealed, but will surely be annouced by BVB in the coming days.
Now all we have to say is: 'Willkommen in Dortmund, Niclas!' Years after Borussia’s idol Fleming Povlsen left Borussia, another Danish player enters the Westfalenstadion. Hopefully with similar success. And hopefully Borussia Dortmund don’t forget to think of an alternative for the right back as “poor” Fernandez was not only a back up for Dede but also for Evanilson. And at the moment with Zdenek Grygera the alternative is on the market... .
