BVB extends contract with Skipper Sebastian Kehl
Borussia Dortmund has extended the contract with skipper Sebastian Kehl for another year. The 32 year old holding midfielder has been in superb form recently after recovering from multiple injuries. Kehl was one of the top earners of the squad and it is widely believed that his new contract will guarantee him only half of his current wages. The money saved would give sporting director Michael Zorc maneuvering room for the upcoming contract talks with Kagawa Shinji or Mario Götze. The contract contains an option for a further extension for another year.
Kehl has been at BVB since 2002 but was only able to play 203 Bundesliga matches over these years due to his series of injuries which started with a brutal foul by then Bayern Munich player Hasan Salihamidzic. "I am very happy that we can continue to plan with our skipper and key-player Sebastian Kehl" said Michael Zorc. Jürgen Klopp also expressed his appreciation of Kehl: "I am very happy that Sebastian and the club could agree on terms. Right now we get to see the best Seabastian Kehl at BVB that I have experienced live personally."
Sebastian Kehl is happy as well: "Borussia Dortmund is a very special club to me and my family. As longest serving player of the squad it is great fun to be part of the positive development at BVB, which I want to continue to push forward."
The BVB fans can be happy too that one of our old farts remains in the club. Kehl is a team leader on and off the pitch and if he is able to keep up his current form he is still among the strongest defensive midfielders in the league.
