BVB CEO Watzke extends his contract to 2016
Borussia Dortmund announced today that they extended the contract with CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke until 2016. Watzke (52) has been CEO since February 2005, taking over in a time of crisis and earning much credit for not just the financial turnaround but also for fostering the athletic recovery. "Hans-Joachim Watzke is a guarantor for continuity and focus on the future for Borussia Dortmund. He had a strong hand in developing the corporation we have today." said BVB President Dr. Reinhard Rauball.
The contract extension follows idential actions from coach Juergen Klopp and Sports Director Michael Zorc. The trio has received much praise inside and outside the organization for building one of the most successful football clubs in Germany in the last few years. "I thought about whether I should commit myself for such a long time but we have such a great collaboration here in Dortmund that I had no other choice. It is a great honor for me to be able to work for this club." said Watzke after the announcement. In the first 6 years of his time as CEO, Dortmund was able to qualify for European competition three times and win the championship once (with a good chance to do it again). The next four years will hopefully see a equally successful time.
