Borussia continues to build for the future
As everything is going according to plan on the pitch right now, the Dortmund management team has been focussing on matters off the field over the last several weeks. Key contracts have been extended, new players signed and more is still to come as Borussia Dortmund continues to build a stronger club for the future.
It comes as a relief for many supporters that our BVB does not have to rely on transfer profits to support club. On the contrary, the signing of native Dortmunder Marco Reus (22) for 17.2m Euros in addition to the young talentsLeonardo Bittencourt (18) from Energie Cottbus for 3m and the Australian Mustafa Amini (18) from Central Coast Mariners, shows that Dortmund has the cash to invest in some serious young talent.
Juergen Klopp’s contract extension to 2016 (previously to 2014) is also a strong sign that the club is takin its long-term strategy seriously. It also sends a powerful signal to the players who have come to regard Klopp as a key factor in their success. Sports director Michael Zorc, who also extended his contract to 2016, is already in negotiations with Sebastian Kehl and Patrick Owomoyela who both are likely to sign extensions to their contracts ending this year. The future of goalie-talent Johannes Focher is unclear at this point while Antionio da Silva and Florian Kringe will leave Dortmund at the end of the 2011/2012 season.
Looking beyond the current year, 2013 has the contracts of Felipe “Tele” Santana, Jakub Blaszczykowski and Shinji Kagawa ending, and the latter has already announced to being contract negotiations soon. Since cashing in on their talent a year before contracts are up is not necessary for financial reasons, chances are good that these cornerstones of the Borussia squad are going to stay. By 2014, more key contracts will be up, including Mats Hummels, Mario Götze, Marcel Schmelzer and Kevin Grosskreuz. Given the pace and determination with which the duo Klopp and Zorc are moving the club forward though, that situation is likely to change soon.
