"Love" - a poem

Our love

Three weeks ago, on June 10th, the evening before the start of the World Cup in South Africa, students of Dortmund's university met to join in for the upcoming tournament. The evening was framed by the singing of songs who can be related to the World Cup and two experts reported about South Africa and its problems far beyond football like poverty or HIV. Furthermore, students of the course related to the English Football Fan Culture had to present their pieces of creative writing about football. Some presented short stories, others wrote and read poems and others presented famous quotes of German football players in English. schwatzgelb-member Vanni was one of the students presenting his own work, here is what he as one of the poets of the course put on paper:

Love

“It would be great”, she says with an ironic smile,
“if you loved me like football after a while”´.
You have all dates of championship victories in your head,
But when it comes to my birthday, I could always get mad.

Every weekend when you should have spared time for me,Choreo
You go to your club where you don’t only drink tea.
Cause if you come back home later at night,
You are singing, chanting and screaming ‘bout pride.

‘You’ll never walk alone’ is the song most important for you,
I hope if you don’t change and I go, this line will be true.
Cause I’m tired of being your filler between two games,
Your love for me should be burning like flames.

So tell me which player in your life you love more:
Me as your wife or your forward looking to score?”
“Listen, girl”, he responds calmly and nice,
“if you ask me this question, I don’t have to think twice.

Football’s a sort of religion and important in my life,The love of fans
But if you really want to know the answer, you’ll be my ex-wife.
Cause football will company me until I die,
Now listen to me and finally cease to cry.

So take me as I am, call me a hooligan,
But I’m nothing more than a drunk football fan.
I love my club, what’s wrong about that?
Since without football, I sure would be dead.
If you want to go now, there’ll be no more sorrow,
At least I can watch the World Cup starting tomorrow."
